Hot Weather Policy

April 7, 2022
Subject: School “hot weather” plans
Dear San Diego Unified Families:
As we enter hot weather conditions, this is a reminder to families that all schools in San Diego Unified are equipped for hot weather. The safety and well being of our students and staff are a top priority. We want to make sure they are as comfortable as possible so that learning can continue. As a result, our schools have a number of guidelines in place for planning instruction during hot weather.
All San Diego Unified schools now have air conditioning. Additionally, all schools have "hot weather" plans in place for continued operations during periods of extremely hot weather. The guidelines for the plans are outlined in Administrative Procedure 4032.
Students are encouraged to bring water bottles to school and dress in light clothing appropriate
for the weather. Schools are encouraging students to take extra water breaks throughout the
day to refill water bottles.
Elementary teachers may rearrange the daily schedule so that basic skills subjects are taught at
the optimal time. Recess activities are limited to quiet games that require a minimum of physical
activity. Physical education activities at all grade levels are limited to less strenuous activities
and/or are rescheduled to a more appropriate time.
There are no District plans to cancel any athletic contests or practices, however sites do have
the ability to adjust as needed. The Athletics Department monitors a daily report when it
becomes hot, and if the combination of temperature and heat index rises to a certain level,
schools are notified so they can act accordingly.
Additional information can be found on the district website Hot Weather Operations page.

Sincerely,
San Diego Unified School District
