Wangenheim was one of 12 schools in the San Diego Unified School District to earn the 2023 California Purple Star distinction, joining a select group of just 59 schools throughout the state to receive the honor this year.
Now in its second year, the California Purple Star School program publicly recognizes schools that go above and beyond in supporting military-connected students and their families. The 2023 San Diego Unified Purple

Military-connected students can expect to change schools between six and nine times from kindergarten through high school, or three times more often than non-military-connected children. As military-connected students transition between schools, often to different states and countries, they must adapt to varying cultures, school populations, curricula, standards, course offerings, schedules, and graduation requirements.

The Purple Star Program was designed to help mitigate these unique challenges by setting standards for and publicly designating military-friendly schools. San Diego is home to one of the largest concentrations of military-connected personnel in the nation, and nearly 8,000 San Diego Unified students have a parent serving in the Armed Forces.

covid test AT HOME COVID TESTING

Beginning Jan. 30, 2023, COVID-19 testing will shift from weekly site testing to an all home test kit model. Students and staff who wish to test regularly, or as needed, may pick up free home test kits from their school office through the end of the 2022-23 school year.

As a reminder, individuals should not attend work or school if they are feeling sick or experiencing symptoms of any cold-like virus, until those symptoms start to improve and there is no fever for 24 hours (without use of fever-reducing medication). If any student or staff tests positive for COVID-19, please do not attend work or school and report the illness  here.

The district will continue contact tracing and case management for all students and staff until further notice. All positive home test results that are reported to the school will be documented, and the district contact tracing team will report those positive results to the County Department of Public Health. The  COVID-19 Dashboard will remain in use for staff and families to monitor case rates at their schools.
